ABOUT

How do the rules work.

These are American Civil War historical miniature wargame rules, using the simultaneous movement & firing method. There is a simple & limited written order system to enable the command structure & fog of battle to be reproduced without slowing the game down. To compliment this we have our brigadier system, where miniature generals have to command their forces, & are not just a morale bonus on a horse.
The rules use a scale of 1 figure represents 20 men, although smaller scales are used in some scenarios.
Base sizes are not important in LRN enabling them to be used with figures already based for many other sets of rules. There is also a points system for those who need one.

What the rules contain.

The Rule set is an A4 sized book with fifty six pages. Sixty full colour diagrams, photographs, illustrations and worked examples. Two full colour quick reference sheets, a multi-scale measuring aid template & a sample battle roster. Also included is a starter scenario for the Battle of Kernstown.

Miscellaneous and optional features such as amphibious operations, siege warfare and ammunition re-supply are covered within the rules.

What are Scenario packs?

In addition to the Rule book there is a growing selection of Scenarios that can be bought individually.
Printed on separate A4 cards each with a full colour map, a pack contains - umpiring notes with deployment & victory conditions. Separate cards for both Union & Confederate forces, complete with tables of organisation, troops strengths, quality & their equipment for each particular battle. Plus ready printed Battle Rosters for each side.
Each pack is supplied in a punched plastic pocket.

A history of LRN at the North Hull Wargames Club.

Like many sets of in-house rules used at the club, the American Civil War set can trace it's ancestry back to scribbled notes on a few sides of A4 back in the early 1980's. As with other sets only the quick reference sheets existed at the time.

The full rule book complete with worked examples & artwork has taken two years to produce, even though the game mechanisms & basic principles have existed for years. We have discovered it is a lot harder to put an explanation in text than show somebody during a game, hence our decision to pack the book with many worked examples.
In February 2002 the rules & scenario packs went into print.
