"Battlegroup North"
The Yorkshire Air Museum
Elvington near York - May 2002.

The battle of Antietam 17th September 1862.

Antietam a one day battle was played over both days at Elvington. We used a figure ratio of 1:60 for the game instead of the usual 1:20. We had 4 Union players & 3 Confederate. The above image shows the battlefield looking due north early in the morning during Hooker's initial assault.

Union attack through the cornfield.

In our game the Union forces took the cornfield early on & never lost it.

This was a cornfield (we call that maize in England) not a wheatfield (we call that corn in England). So we are using a cornfield to be a cornfield, when we should be using corn, which actually isn't!
Confusing isn't it - English...

So who won?

The Confederates needed to hold on until A.P. Hill arrived in the nick of time to win.
In our game the Confederates were in a safe defensive position by the end of the day. Burnside never made it across his bridge - A.P Hill wasn't needed.
